GPS Aviation DB

UPDATED: The end of DAFIF and GAvDB?

UPDATE:
We all tried to change it by sending our comments, but NGA has confirmed that DAFIF will be removed from public access on October 1st, 2006. Read the official press release.

NGA announced on November 18, 2004 its intention to withdraw DAFIF and other aeronautical publications from public distribution on October 1.

Because DAFIF is the main source of data for GAvDB, this would mean the end of GAvDB as it is currently known. For more information and to send your comments to NGA, read:

What is GAvDB?

GPS Aviation DB is a world aeronautical database in ESRI Shapefile format to be used with Magellan Datasend software and uploaded into a compatible GPS.

How much does it cost?

GAvDB is free software and therefore it has no cost at all. For further details, visit Distribution page.

If you find this database useful, instead of money you can send me an e-mail with your comments, telling me which is your home airfield or even if you want, a picture of it or of the aircraft you fly.

Why a worldwide database?

In September, 2002, while studying for the PPL(A) theoretical knowledge examination, I thought on adquiring a GPS with aeronautical information. But even Jeppesen databases missed information on minor spanish airfields.

Searching on the net I found USA Aviation Database site, where Brian Wade describes the way he built his own aviation database for a Magellan GPS. Seeing that, I decided to build my own out of the Spanish AIP.

The main drawback is that, although being at only 65NM from France, certainly the spanish AIP has no information about that country.

Then I found DAFIF. Althought it is not so complete as I would like, it is the main source of indormation of GAvDB, completed with spanish AIP.
