Guangzhou Bridges

THIS PAGE IS A WORK IN PROGRESS

The rate at which China is building its infrastructure is just amazing. Every year I see new projects have been completed and Guangzhou is changing very fast. There is a lot of residential apartment buildings being built as well. I would not say private or public construction are of much beauty, they are generally rather dull or even ugly but for a country where just 30 years ago people were starving by the millions to have this rate of development is quite an accomplishment.

In the years since I first went to Guangzhou I have seen the waterfront change drastically. It has been renovated and improved although the river is still polluted and needs to be cleaned up though. Several new bridges have been built. From west to east I have the following clearly identified:

  • Zhujiang Bridge
  • Zhujiang Tunnel
  • Hedong Bridge (1997)
  • Renmin Bridge
  • Jiefang Bridge
  • Haizhu Bridge (70 years old)
  • Jiangwan Bridge
  • Haiyin Bridge (1988)
  • Guangzhou Bridge
  • Huanan Bridge
The ones in blue are of more recent construction.

In August 2003 seven bridges and the Pearl River Tunnel were tested for safety. Nine freight cars carrying 30 tons of goods were driven across the Haizhu Bridge, which is 70 years old, to test its safety. The other six bridges tested are Renmin Bridge, Jiefang Bridge, Haiyin Bridge, Jiangwan Bridge, Guangzhou Bridge and Hedong Bridge.

The Haizhu and Renmin bridges are probably the oldest. The Renmin bridge is concrete while the Haizhu is a strange mixture of cables and riveted steel.

The Haizhu bridge is really ugly and much uglier than the picture reflects.
