Young couples like to have elaborate weddings and
there is a big wedding industry set up to serve this need in China. They have
shops and they set up temporary tents or booths in malls and shopping centers where
those who are shopping for these services can look at catalogues and discuss what
services theywant to buy. The pictures above are from a magazine-catalogue
from a chain of shops called Bassar. The photo below is of a tent where you can
see samples of wedding portraits painted by hand.
Besides wedding planning, catering, etc., one of the most important services they
provide is the wedding photographs. These are not just photos of the ceremony
and festivities as they happen, but rather, elaborate, posed, photographs in different
styles of dress. This means a couple will pose for photos dressed maybe in
what looks like late 19th century western dress with a lot of fancy added and also
in traditional chinese dress. These photos will be taken at some nice location
totally separate from the wedding location, and I am not sure they are necessarily
taken on the same day. The photos below are of couples having their wedding photos taken at Shamian Island, Guangzhou.
