Bernard on his myspace site about the mcalmont & butler single:

"just to clarify...we havent made an album and this is not the start of yet another boring big sell campaign.....when me & david recorded this track it was , along with one other song the only thing EMI would pay for us to do...we decided not to try and impress but to do what the fuck we wanted and ignore all their advice....they dropped us without hearing it...
i was always very proud of this song and when the tears intervened it was a welcome relief from the trauma me & david had faced demoing for an a&r guy who had already told us he wasnt interested....but i always promised we would put this out some day somehow....so i finished it off alone and pledged to press up a few copies on my own, without a sleeve, a b side, a tour, a plugger, a poster campaign, any marketing , any bullshit...thats was my dream, and rough trade kindly interevened and offered to take the burden off my hands....but the dream remains as deliberately purist as the song...i have no interest in pursuing the jools holland show or the 4th on the bill slot at reading...i want to take it to any radio station that wants to play it and give it to them personally....the press need play no part for me.....we are outside that world and every other with our intention for this song..there is no b-side because we didnt record one...there is no cd because we will lose money to try and distribute one....there is no sleeve because we have nothing to say that isnt in the song....there are no credits because we dont owe anybody anything....there is no video because lets face it they are always rubbish....and there is no live version because i dont have 3 drummers...i like there being a black piece of vinyl with the music noticeably etched into it....ive always had little affection for cd singles, and to go against the purists opinion there can be no purer way of presenting a piece of music than on a format that you physically cant touch....and lets face it they sound alright and if you say otherwise you're boring
so there you go.....its my baby , take her or leave her , i dont care but she's a lady all the same"
